A couple of nights ago, Brandon and I were out to dinner talking about our goals and dreams for 2019 when I mentioned how much I really want to focus on traveling. I feel like every year when I start dreaming about the potential of the months ahead traveling is always on my list. Always. So I finally asked myself if it’s been on my list of dreams and goals for so long, why haven’t I done more to achieve it and actually go places?
I can remember being little and telling my mom that when I grew up I wasn’t going to live anywhere. Instead, I was going to travel all the time and just live wherever I ended up. She would always roll her eyes and kind of laugh it off as a kid being a kid but there’s part of me that never really let that fantasy completely die. Now, I no longer dream of living in a van or RV and I have no intentions of packing it up and being a digital nomad but I do want to spend more time traveling. I’m fortunate that I’m able to take 3 weeks of vacation every year from my job and now that we live in Missouri we are practically in the center of the country so there’s no excuse for not traveling more frequently.
While I’d love to travel outside of the country again my real travel goals are right here in the good ol’ USA. There are so many states I’ve never been to and so many parts of the country I’ve never seen that I find myself irritated I haven’t taken better advantage of our ability to travel. I have spent so much time traveling (and living) up and down the east coast and throughout the south that I really want to spend the next couple of years traveling west so I can cross the PNW, west coast, and southwest off my travel list.
Brandon used to live in New Mexico and he talks about it all the time. He’s always telling me how beautiful it is out there and how the desert landscape and
Brandon used to have family in Nebraska and since it’s so close it just seems like a place we should cross off our list. It’s literally like 4 hours away so it seems silly to not take a long weekend over there and see what it’s all about. I’ll be in Tennessee and Oklahoma for work and since Brandon works from home he’s going to travel with me so we can spend my downtime exploring the area and we’ll road trip back to Missouri to give us more time to explore.
I’ve been working with the Wyoming Tourism Board on a trip out there but we want to see the Natl Parks so we will probably wait until they reopen. Our goal was to visit Wyoming with our dogs during late spring and I’m hopeful that still happens. Minnesota and Washington were states we tossed in during our planning just because I want to see Minneapolis and he wants to visit Seattle. It’s a lot of traveling but I’m confident we can do it if we prioritize it and really make it a top goal for us.
I spotted this 50 States Photo Map when I was browsing Etsy and it just reconfirmed how much I’d love to one day visit them all. Even though we’ve been to a lot of states together already (and lived in many of them as well) there is still a lot of the map to see and I hope we’re able to really focus on doing that, starting this year. I have a wall in our living room right next to the stairs
If travel is on your list of goals for this year I’d love to hear where you are planning to travel to!
