This past Sunday was expected to see cold temps and rain due to a second “bomb cyclone” sweeping through the Midwest so Brandon and I decided to try to squeeze our entire weekend into a Saturday in the city. We headed down to Webster Groves first to pay a visit to Maypop Coffee + Garden Shop. A few of my favorite STL instagrammers frequently talk about that place and since I did need to replace the plants I lost when we moved here last summer I thought it was as good a place as any to start.
It is a plant lovers dream! We stopped into the coffee shop for lattes then spent at least an hour browsing through their outdoor garden and indoor succulent greenhouse. I found a new Hens & Chicks to replace the one I lost in our move (RIP Helen) and poked around for a new Fang succulent to pair up with Peter. Fang succulents have the most amazing fuzzy leaves and have quickly become some of my favorites! We named our new succulents Matilda and Spike Jones (Mr. Jones). They are the perfect little guys to liven up our home this spring.
While I was there I also picked up a mini succulent for my desk at work. I’m going to be moving to a workspace near a window so I’ll get tons of bright light for it. The little planter I bought for her isn’t quite large enough so I’ll have to re-pot her again soon to make sure she has enough space to grow.
I’m heading away on a business trip soon but when I get back I also want to grab a snake plant for our bathrooms. They aren’t great for dogs but it’s not like my dogs spend a lot of time hanging out in our bathroom so I’m not too worried about it. Snake plants grow great with minimal light which makes them perfect for bathrooms and other dark places.
After loading up my new plant babies we drove over to the CWE to have lunch at the Kingside Diner. The CWE is one of the most popular districts in St Louis and we were feeling so annoyed with ourselves for not being down there yet. Kingside Diner is a chess-themed diner across the street from the World Chess Hall of Fame and next door to the Saint Louis Chess Club. I’m terrible at chess but Brandon enjoys it so I thought he’d appreciate a chess-themed lunch. Unfortunately, we got there around 3:30 only to find that Kingside Diner closed at 2pm. 🙁
We grabbed lunch at a sports bar instead then stopped by The Cup for a cupcake. I ordered the Lemon Cupcake and it was legit the best cupcake I’ve ever had in my life and that is not an exaggeration. I was so happy I only bought one to take home because I have no doubt I’d have eaten a whole dozen and had serious regrets later when I was suffering from a sugar-induced stomach ache. I mean, it would have been worth it but one was enough. SO good though. I mean, guys, it was SO GOOD!
I can’t wait for more warm days here in The Lou. I have a huge list of places I want to explore especially in some of the cuter neighborhoods around the city. We felt so isolated all winter because we weren’t able to explore as much as we usually would. It was a harsh winter with so much snow and ice that we didn’t feel comfortable going into the city. With spring here and summer on the horizon we feel like we have a lot of lost time to make up for! There’s also supposed to be a new aquarium opening up this summer that I’m excited to check out. I know it won’t be able to compare to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta but I have high hopes for it anyway.
