Earlier this year I started getting into baking homemade dog cookies for my dogs as an extra way to spoil them and shower them with love. There are definitely dog treat brands we love but sometimes it just feels nice to make them something special myself. Since it’s Christmas time I decided to pull the cookie cutters out of the cabinet and whip a batch up of their favorite peanut butter and cinnamon cookies. They went a little crazy once they could smell them but it’s Christmas so we’re all a little crazy, haha.

A couple of weeks ago I visited a local honey farmer and bought a couple sample bottles of his honey varieties. For fun, I drizzled a little bit of that honey into the cookie dough and my dogs seemed to love it! After their first cookie they were begging for more a bit more than normal so I’m thinking the honey was a well-received addition. Because of that, I updated this recipe to include honey but you can leave it out with no problems.

Before I share the recipe, I want to offer a word about baking for dogs. I use whole wheat flour when baking for our dogs because our vet recommended it. It offers additional health benefits to your dog and they won’t know the difference. If you don’t have whole wheat flour on hand, unbleached all-purpose flour is safe for dogs so you can substitute that instead.

*Consult with your veterinarian about proper substitutes if your dog has exhibited food sensitivities or potential allergies

If you’re hosting the holidays at your home this year and have family or friends that like to treat your dog, you can also use mini cookie cutters to make bite-sized treats. That way your guests can sneak your dog a treat or two without making him sick or slipping him something off the table that he shouldn’t be eating. No one wants a sick dog on Christmas but it’s so hard to resist those pleading sweet eyes. These dog-friendly cookies solve the problem for everyone.

If you’re new to baking cookies for your dog, this is one of the easiest recipes to get started with. You likely have all of the necessary ingredients on hand which makes these even easier. No special trips to the grocery required! As you become more familiar with dog-friendly foods, you’ll probably find yourself baking and cooking for them more often.

Instructions

  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour *
    1.5 tsp baking powder
    1/3 cup creamy peanut butter
    1 cup hot water
    1 tsp honey
    dash of cinnamon
  • Preheat the oven to 375-degrees and line large two cookie sheets with parchment paper
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and baking powder.
Add the creamy peanut butter and hot water, stir until well-blended. Drizzle honey over the dough and mix lightly. The cookie dough shouldn’t feel wet or sticky; if it does add a little more flour.
On a floured surface, roll the cookie dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon over the top of the dough and brush evenly to cover all edges. Cut into shapes using your favorite cookie cutters. Arrange on cookie sheets.
Bake for 15 – 20 minutes or until firm and a light golden brown.
Allow the cookies to cool before serving to your dogs (I know it’s hard to ignore their begging eyes but you don’t want to burn their little mouths). Store in an airtight container.

Notes

*if you don’t have whole wheat dough or if your dog has a wheat allergy, you can substitute any unbleached all-purpose flour.

They are so delicious for pups! I hope you enjoy baking cookies for your dog and I’d love to hear what you think of them! Happy Holidays!
