HAPPY OCTOBER! Last week it finally started to feel like fall around here. There were a few mornings I woke up to temperatures in the mid-40’s which made it even more difficult than ever to get out of bed. It would end up in the high 70’s by mid-day which made me realize that weather in the Midwest is seriously weird. Like…pick a lane Missouri! I’ve had a hard enough time getting into fall this year, I don’t need the weather messing with my head too.
Brandon and I chose “Cherish” as our word of the year for 2018; at the beginning of each month I’m sharing a check-in to update you on how we’re living our word of the year. Our goal is to stay focused on taking time to appreciate where we are in life and being content with our day-to-day.
I mentioned the crazy weather to a co-worker who laughed and said, “Ashley, in Missouri layers are your best friend!” so I swung into Kohls and TJ Maxx to grab a few long cardigans and other layer-able items to add to my closet. I’m also planning a fall photo shoot with my pup for later this month and it feels good to have something fun to look forward to. 🙂
October – Looking Ahead
Today is October 1st which is also World Vegetarian Day! As of last month, Brandon no longer follows a vegetarian diet. He’s started adding fish and chicken back into his diet for medical reasons. There are a lot of vegetarian recipes we love so I’m sure Meatless Monday is going to continue to be a thing around here. If you want to go meatless today for Meatless Monday and World Vegetarian Day, here are a few recipes I bet you’ll love:
- Spicy Black Bean Burger with Jalapenos
- Chili-Roasted Carrot Tacos with Cilantro Avocado Dressing
- Chipotle Veggie Pizza
In my Cherish: September post I also mentioned how I was going through a period in my life where I needed to step away from the church body and focus on my 1-on-1 faith with God. The deeper I got into focusing on that personal relationship the more I realized how truly and deeply I’ve needed that time to myself. I went through a lot of pain and healing during September but I feel myself coming through the other side feeling happier and more hopeful than ever.
An enormously helpful resource for me during my time of trial has been the Seasons of Soap Bible study devotional I got from Horacio Printing. After only a few days working through a SOAP study, I felt God moving in my heart in a way I hadn’t felt in months, possibly a year. Heading into October, my heart is in a much happier place.
A couple of days ago I read about The Last 90 Days Challenge on my friend Chelsea’s blog, The Girl Who Loved to Write and I’m excited to take part in it with her. The whole purpose behind it is to not wait until the New Year to start being good to ourselves but rather, to take advantage of the spirit of the holidays and start focusing on better habits now. The challenge feels totally doable so I’m excited to take part in it and start being kinder to myself.
This week we have a few doctor’s appointments to take care of then we’re hopeful we can put health problems behind us and move forward with enjoying the rest of our year. There are some great
