For weeks, I stressed and stressed over our choice of canvas art for our living room wall. Our living room is kind of small with just enough room for our sectional and a few tables. It opens up to our dining room, kitchen, and the stairway and since the TV is mounted on the wall it really only leaves one wall to decorate. One odd little wall.
Now, I have a phobia of glass on the wall so I was nervous about hanging pictures or art. I shared our blank wall in an Instagram story and asked for help. You guys had great suggestions! Some people suggested that I do a gallery wall but use plexiglass or just take the glass out of the frames. Other suggested a fun bold wallpaper. A couple others suggested putting up shelving so I could mix it up seasonally. I loved all of those ideas but ultimately settled on doing one large piece of canvas which we got from CanvasHQ.

I’ve loved giant pieces of wall art ever since I was a teenager. My mom had an enormous piece of papyrus painted with hieroglyphics and Egyptian art that my brother bought for her during his trip to Egypt. It took up an entire wall and was absolutely stunning. Buying an authentic Egyptian papyrus isn’t exactly an option for me here in Missouri but hanging a huge piece of canvas art as a focal point definitely is. CanvasHQ offered a complimentary canvas to help us decorate our space and helped me nail down exactly the look I wanted for our room.
After what felt like a million mockups of different sizes, different prints, and different styles, I finally settled on a dark botanical print. Botanicals, florals, and neutrals are my favorite but they are often hard to combine. Most florals are so bright and colorful but that’s not me at all. I fell so hard for this print as soon as I saw it. I knew it was exactly what I wanted for our living space.
Directly opposite of the canvas art is a large window in our dining room. During the day the window brings in a lot of light which balances the heaviness of the canvas perfectly. Plus, I brighten it up with blankets, pillows, and other accessories in lighter colors and neutrals. When I first shared this mockup on Instagram I know a lot of people had concerns over a large black canvas on the wall. I felt conflicted over it for a few days too but in the end, I knew it was going to fit my style.
I love chunky heavy furniture, dark colors, neutrals, and thick textures. There’s a coziness I feel when everything else around me feels strong, stable, and weighted. It’s almost like walking around constantly wrapped in one of those warm weighted blankets. I feel safe and grounded, which is exactly how I want to feel when I’m at home.
It’s such a comfortable space for me now. It’s exactly what I wanted for those nights when I just want to cuddle with Brandon, the dogs, and my favorite horror movie (it’s The Return of the Living Dead, btw). Now, all it needs is
Now, if I could just do something about that stairway…
