Safe Garden-Fresh People Food for Dogs

Has anyone else started their garden already? This year I’m focusing on growing some people food for dogs as well as our own edibles so I can mix some homegrown healthy vegetables into our pup’s diets. They’ve been doing great on their grain-free diet but I want to include more straight-from-our-garden veg in their bowls this year too. It’s a huge priority for me and I feel like I’ve been at Lowe’s non-stop stocking up on gardening containers, potting soil, and edible plants. Last year, our garden was ravished by deer, rabbits, and other wildlife so I’m including a couple of plants specifically for them too. I’m hoping that by putting those plants outside of our fencing and our plants inside of my fencing maybe they’ll leave my food alone.

The best people food for dogs

For dogs, eating is a communal practice and helps reinforce the bond you have with each other. Since dogs are often rewarded with treats, food is easily recognized as a reward for positive reinforcement. It’s really no wonder they learn to beg for food and expect that we’re going to share a little bit with them when they’ve taken care to be very good boys. So, while it’s natural to want to spoil them you do have to be careful with people food for dogs and take precautions to make sure you’re giving them food they can digest and enjoy. People food for dogs isn’t terrible, as long as you’re giving them the right things. I have been known to sneak them a bite of cheese off my plate but for the most part, I try to give them only food I’ve picked up from the farmer’s market or grown myself.

Safe People Food for Dogs

If you are wondering what you’re growing out in your garden that might be suitable for your dog, below is a list of the top garden-fresh people food for dogs. As always, provide the people food to your dog in small quantities until you know for sure that it’s ok for your dog. Some dogs are more sensitive to foods than others and you don’t want to over-indulge and cause upset bellies in your best friend(s). You should also serve the vegetables raw without any seasonings or additives.

  • Carrots
  • Blueberries
  • Broccoli florets
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Celery
  • Cucumbers
  • Green Beans
  • Peas
  • Potatoes
  • Spinach
  • Sweet Potatoes

Cheagle

While people food for dogs is ok, it’s important to remember that it should never make up more than 10% of your dog’s diet and you need to adjust the amount of kibble they eat so they don’t over-indulge. If your dogs are anything like mine, they’ll eat everything you put in front of them even if it makes them sick. We also restrict people food to being served in their own bowls and at their own mealtimes. It helps prevent them from developing the annoying habit of begging for food while you’re at the dining table.

It took a while but our dogs eventually learned they aren’t going to get a single nibble of anything while we are at the table eating so they don’t even try to beg. They’ll go lay down while we eat but they start paying attention once we’re in the kitchen cleaning up because they know that if they get any extra nibbles it’s after the kitchen is clean. They watch me like a hawk, haha.

If you’ve been wondering about treating your furry companions with people food, go right ahead and do it with anything on our list. Just keep it in moderation and start with little nibbles. They’ll love you (even more) for it!

  1. I don’t have a dog (yet) but this was really helpful for when I do get one and for when I’m at my boyfriend’s place where he does have a dog!

    • Thanks so much Christine! When we have people over I’ll sometimes put out a bowl of “dog snacks” in case anyone wants to give in and sneak them a treat. It lets people spoil the dogs without giving them anything dangerous. It’s usually peas, carrot bites, and Caesar’s dog treats.

    • I like to freeze carrots and give it to them outside during the summer for something to chew on instead of rawhide. I worry about it inside though because carrot can stain your carpet.
