Things To Do in Charleston, WV This Summer

Summer is here and over here in the LaMar household we are really excited about it. It’s our first summer here in Charleston, WV and I want to embrace it. I’ve already planted a few veggie plants for us to harvest soon and the fresh herbs are doing great. The dogs have been loving being outside, running around off-leash, and chasing the rabbits that linger around our yard. Don’t worry, they haven’t actually caught any rabbits, they are all about the chase, lol. As much as we are all loving being outdoors, I told Brandon that I want to make sure we are being intentional about embracing this location and getting involved in local culture. I’ve been watching community calendars and marking my planner with events I want to attend.

Also, I wanted to share a bit about Charleston, West Virginia because I’m already kind of sick of saying Charleston and everyone thinking I mean South Carolina.

Get out and enjoy everything that summer in Charleston, WV has to offer! There are tons of festivals, concerts, and events for you and your family to enjoy.

We’re going to be taking a few summer road trips this year but when are local, you may find us at…

Artwalk

  • WHERE: Downtown Charleston

From what I understand, this is usually held during the third Thursday of each month and participating shops and restaurants extend their hours for browsing, shopping and mingling. Since there are a few places downtown we’ve been wanting to check out, we are certainly putting this on the calendar. For more information, visit www.artwalkcwv.com.

Live on the Levee

  • WHERE: Haddad Riverfront Park

Live on the Levee is a free concert series that happens every Friday afternoon from May 26 – Sept 1. I don’t really know what the music scene is like around here but if I’m being honest, they had me at free concert. Even if I hate the music, what have I got to lose? View the complete Live on the Levee 2017 schedule.

3rd Annual Kegs 4 K9s

  • WHEN: 07/01/17 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM
  • WHERE: Magic Island, Charleston

Kegs 4 K9s is KCHA’s signature brew festival and it’s all to benefit shelter pets! Y’all know how much I love doing things to benefit shelter pets (ok, dogs of all kinds really) so this is right up my alley! This event is all about craft beer and music so even though I’m not much of a drinker I’m down to go. Tickets are $35 – $40 and include a couple drinks but it’s for the dogs so don’t complain about pricing.

DIY Sushi

  • WHEN: 07/06/17 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
  • WHERE: Kanawha County Main Library

Ummm…they teach you how to make and roll your own sushi for free? Yeah, sign me up! We love Sushi and until I heard about this event I had absolutely no idea that Charleston had a “Japanese Outreach Initiative Coordinator” but apparently they do. Megumi Homma, the Japanese Outreach Initiative Coordinator for West Virginia, is going to teach us how to make and roll our own sushi and I’ll be there with bells on (kidding, it’s just a phrase).

Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus Live

  • WHEN: 7/21/2017 07:00 PM – 10:00 PM
  • WHERE: University of Charleston Stadium 200 Elizabeth St.

Ok, so I’m not 100% certain I’ll be there but I have to admit that I’m at least intrigued by the idea. They say you can expect to see the worlds biggest and most dangerous stunts in a fully choreographed, actions sports, theatrical spectacular! I mean…when they sell it like that how can I resist? It’s not totally my thing but it does at least seem to be an interesting way to spend the evening.

Multifest

  • WHEN: 08/04/17 12:00 AM – 08/06/17 12:00 AM
  • WHERE: Haddad Riverfront Park

I’m always down for anything that encourages diversity and acceptance of all people so Multifest sounds like my kind of event. Apparently, it’s been a thing here in Charleston for the last 28 years and I’m hoping that it continues to be a thing and that diversity in this area can truly be celebrated. It also sounds like a really great way to get out and meet some people in the area. I’m there!

I’m still keeping my eyes open though because I know there is more to come. We are also planning to hit up some of the local hiking trails and start exploring a bit. I am hoping to take the dogs but I don’t think those little guys can handle it. They are still getting used to the Charleston, WV mountains after living in Atlanta, GA for so long.

  1. Dude…the sushi event sounds rocking 🙂 I learned how to years ago but haven’t in years so would love to re-learn that and get some tips from a pro on where in the area to buy good sushi grade fish! Anyhows-that town looks so cute! When we move back to SC-this will definitely be a weekend trip for us to check out and say HELLO 🙂
