10 Bible Verses For When You’re Feeling Hopeless

I think it’s only normal for us all to feel a little bit hopeless at times. It’s not good, but it’s normal. Sometimes it feels like just when things are starting to go right and everything is coming up roses, something else comes along to make it come crashing back down.

It’s a horrible feeling.

Do you ever feel the urge to give in to the overwhelming feeling of hopelessness and let it just swallow you up? I do too. Sometimes, it’s just hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel (and believe that it’s hope rather than a train bearing down on you). I remember during one of my most hopeless moments, I didn’t think there was ever going to be “better days” again.

I once lost my job mere weeks after moving to a new city. At the time, it was soul-crushing.

When you're feeling hopeless and full of despair, it's hard to find comfort in many places. It's a struggle when your heart is aching but there's always hope to be found in God. These 10 Bible Verses for when you're feeling hopeless are perfect for those days when you need to be uplifted and comforted.

I enjoyed my job and I was very happy with my company. The job loss was completely unexpected news and very unfortunate considering that my husband and I had relocated for me to accept the position and suddenly found ourselves with a rapidly depleting savings account, a lot of bills stacking up, and no immediate prospects on the horizon. The hopelessness of the moment hit me like a tidal wave leaving me feeling lost and overwhelmed. At times it felt like I couldn’t breathe. I took my anger out on my husband and my dogs and cried almost non-stop.

When I eventually did turn to him, when I read His word, I started to find comfort.  I decided to pull together my 10 favorite Bible verses, the 10 that gave me the most comfort, in hopes that they will comfort you as well.

  1. I love the 2 Corinthians verse! One of my favorites is Galatians 6:9 – “Do not become weary in doing good because at the proper time you will reap a harvest if you do not give up.”

  2. I do this sometimes too – look up multiple verses that will help me in times of need. I keep all of them in a folder in my email – and actually I think I have a women’s study bible that has something similar. Philippians 4:6-7 is so good. Another one of my favorites/go-tos is Matthew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

  3. An oldie but goodie, Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my all-time favorites. Thanks for sharing these, I always need a gentle reminder. 🙂

  4. Thank you for these! I love Philippians and also Psalm 94:18-19. God is so good to us, isn’t He? Always ready to catch us when we fall and see us through our hard times.

  5. Thank you!! I knew a few of these but it’s so great to have a whole list to reference for the days when life just kinda sucks.

  6. Amen and amen! Thank you for offering words of encouragement even in the midst of your hard times. Praying for you dear friend!

  7. Love this! Keep writing your heart out! xoxo I found you on the Peony Project Facebook page! Find me on

  8. Ashley I’m so sorry to hear about your job. I will be praying for you and your husband. Turning to God during this time is your very best option. I’m confident he will open new doors for you as you journey through this challenging time.

    • Hi Brittany! Thanks so much my sweet friend! This actually occurred (and was written) at the end of 2014 just after we moved to Atlanta. You are 100% correct when you say that God will open new doors because I was hired at a new company only 4 weeks later so all worked out very well for us. There was initial panic however but I’m glad that God was there for me.

    • Kev, I emailed you. I’ll pray that you find peace with who you are and that you find comfort in love. XOXO
